Access to Medicines

The Health Justice Initiative (HJI) aims to address the social justice problem of inequity in access to essential health products and services, particularly for vulnerable populations in South Africa and the Global South. The organisation aims to reform systemic drivers of inequity, such as public health spending inequalities, pharmaceutical company secrecy, and an intellectual property regime rooted in racism and colonialism. Addressing these inequities is crucial for building resilience against future health crises on marginalised communities. HJI’s work targets the structural drivers through initiatives such as litigating for transparency in vaccine contracts, influencing legislative reforms to support universal healthcare, advocating for changes to the global IP system to enable affordable access to health technologies, and raising awareness of the intersection of health justice and climate injustice.
